Scott Newstok<\/a> teaches literature of the English Renaissance as well as film, rhetoric, education, lyric poetry, and the humanities. In 2012 Professor Newstok received the Campus Life Award for Outstanding Faculty Member and in 2016 he received the Clarence Day Award<\/a> for Outstanding Teaching. Before joining the Rhodes faculty in 2007, Professor Newstok earned his doctorate from Harvard University<\/a>, taught at Oberlin College<\/a>, Amherst College<\/a>, and Gustavus Adolphus College<\/a>, and held the Post-Doctoral Fellowship in the Humanities at Yale University Library\u2032s Special Collections<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Newstok has published five books: a scholarly edition of Kenneth Burke\u2032s Shakespeare criticism<\/a>; a collection of essays on Macbeth<\/em> and race<\/a> (co-edited with Ayanna Thompson<\/a>); a monograph on early modern English epitaphs<\/a>; an edition of Michael Cavanagh’s Paradise Lost: A Primer<\/a><\/em> (CUAP 2020); and How to Think Like Shakespeare<\/a> <\/em>(Princeton, 2020). Newstok\u2032s work has been recognized by grants and fellowships from the American Philosophical Society<\/a>, the Folger Shakespeare Library<\/a>, the Institute for Research in the Humanities<\/a>, the Marco Institute<\/a>, the Mellon Foundation<\/a>, the National Endowment for the Humanities<\/a>, the National Humanities Center<\/a>, and the Newberry Library<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newstok is the Founding Director of the Pearce Shakespeare Endowment<\/a> and is a board member of Opera Memphis<\/a>, Beth Sholom Synagogue<\/a>, and the Libertas School of Memphis<\/a>. He previously served as Co-Director (with Dr. Judith Haas<\/a>) of Postgraduate Scholarships<\/a>, Humanities faculty member of the Rhodes Board of Trustees<\/a>, President of Rhodes\u2032 Phi Beta Kappa<\/a> chapter, and trustee of Humanities Tennessee<\/a>, the state chapter of the National Endowment for the Humanities<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
