In 2012 Professor Newstok received the Campus Life Award for&nbsp;Outstanding Faculty Member&nbsp;and in 2016 he received the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.rhodes.edu\/stories\/newstok-and-blankenship-win-clarence-day-awards-outstanding-teaching-and-research\">Clarence Day Award<\/a>&nbsp;for Outstanding Teaching. Before joining the Rhodes faculty in 2007, Professor Newstok earned his doctorate from&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/english.fas.harvard.edu\/\">Harvard University<\/a>, taught at&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oberlin.edu\/english\/\">Oberlin College<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amherst.edu\/academiclife\/departments\/english\/\">Amherst College<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gustavus.edu\/english\/\">Gustavus Adolphus College<\/a>, and held the Post-Doctoral Fellowship in the Humanities at&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/guides.library.yale.edu\/specialcollections\">Yale University Library\u2032s Special Collections<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Newstok has published five&nbsp;books: a scholarly edition of&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.parlorpress.com\/shakespeare.html\">Kenneth Burke\u2032s Shakespeare criticism<\/a>; a collection of essays on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.palgrave.com\/gp\/book\/9780230616332\"><em>Macbeth<\/em>&nbsp;and race<\/a>&nbsp;(co-edited with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/english.asu.edu\/content\/ayanna-thompson\">Ayanna Thompson<\/a>);&nbsp;a monograph on&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.palgrave.com\/br\/book\/9780230203259#reviews\">early modern English epitaphs<\/a>; an edition of Michael Cavanagh&#8217;s&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hfsbooks.com\/books\/paradise-lost-cavanagh-newstok\/\">Paradise Lost: A Primer<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;(CUAP 2020);&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/press.princeton.edu\/books\/hardcover\/9780691177083\/how-to-think-like-shakespeare\">How to Think Like Shakespeare<\/a>&nbsp;<\/em>(Princeton, 2020).&nbsp;Newstok\u2032s work has been recognized by grants and fellowships from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/amphilsoc.org\/about\">American Philosophical Society<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.folger.edu\/\">Folger Shakespeare Library<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/irh.wisc.edu\/fellowships.php?menu=5\">Institute for Research in the Humanities<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/web.utk.edu\/~marco\/newberry.php\">Marco Institute<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mellon.org\/\">Mellon Foundation<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.neh.gov\/\">National Endowment for the Humanities<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/nationalhumanitiescenter.org\/\">National Humanities Center<\/a>, and the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newberry.org\/\">Newberry Library<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Newstok&nbsp;is the Founding Director of&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhodes.edu\/shakespeare-rhodes\">Pearce Shakespeare Endowment<\/a>&nbsp;and is a board member of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.operamemphis.org\/board-of-trustees\">Opera Memphis<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsholom.org\/leadership.html\">Beth Sholom Synagogue<\/a>,&nbsp;and&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.libertasmemphis.org\/\">Libertas School of Memphis<\/a>.&nbsp;He previously served as&nbsp;Co-Director (with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhodes.edu\/bio\/haasj\">Dr. Judith Haas<\/a>) of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhodes.edu\/academics\/experiential-and-applied-learning\/postgraduate-scholarships\">Postgraduate Scholarships<\/a>, Humanities faculty member of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhodes.edu\/content\/corporation-board-trustees-0\">Rhodes Board of Trustees<\/a>,&nbsp;President of Rhodes\u2032&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbk.org\/Scott-Newstok\">Phi Beta Kappa<\/a>&nbsp;chapter, and&nbsp;trustee of&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/humanitiestennessee.org\/\">Humanities Tennessee<\/a>, the state chapter of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.neh.gov\/\">National Endowment for the Humanities<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Click here to listen to his interview.
